Sound & Silence: the art of listening

Join us for a very special experience of the senses in our Chapel. We will engage in the art of listening, with sound and silence, inviting participants to improvise sound, with the direction and gentle facilitation of Eric Hollander, our current Musician in Residence. No previous musical or improvising experience is required for your participation.
We will gather as a small ensemble of listeners so as to learn how to free the voice of the spiritual life, express our journey in sound, create listening spaces for one another, and reflect together on the sonic experience. Improvisation (making sound with provided instruments) brings us to a moment of vulnerability and openness – and also to the edge of silence: into which a voice burgeons, moves, and comes to rest.
“As a performing musician with experience in many different styles and contexts, I have had the joy of finding myself often embedded in moments of improvisation. Over the years, these moments of freedom became increasingly important to me and eventually opened up the possibility of engaging in music as prayer. As a musician, this was an important achievement.” – Eric Hollander
