SUMMARY:Crafting with Soul: The Life in Christ Paper Flower
DESCRIPTION:Crafting with Soul: The Life in Christ Paper Flower is a unique and enriching creative workshop designed to nourish both your artistic spirit and your faith journey. In this workshop\, participants will each build a giant paper rose while reflecting on aspects of Christian life petal by petal. As we work through building the flower\, we will explore Holy Scripture\, journal\, and have discussion time to share our experiences with one another. This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to combine creativity with introspection\, all within a supportive and uplifting community. No previous creative skills required. "Crafting with Soul: The Life in Christ Paper Flower" is more than just a crafting session; it's a holistic experience that nurtures your creativity and faith\, leaving you feeling inspired and renewed. \n\nShera Morris grew up in Alabama with a pastor father and an art teacher mother. Her household was equal parts creative projects and preaching. As a true reflection of that upbringing\, Shera has owned several creative businesses and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Theological Studies. The thesis to finish that degree was titled Visual Arts in Ministry. These two worlds have always been combined for Shera and she looks forward to continuing to reflect the creativity of our Creator. You can find Shera on Instagram @whatshemakin where she's making dinner for her family\, decor for her home in Elkins Park\, or dolls for her daughter.\n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: September 21 \nTreat your soul to a full day art retreat!  We're offering the option to register for a full-day option\, which includes participating in our Crafting with Soul workshop in the morning with Shera Morris\, enjoying a delicious lunch provided by the Center\, and wrapping up the day with SoulCollage® with Kathy Garrett. \n\n\n*If you are a student\, full-time volunteer or campus minister\, please use the discount code ART when registering.  \n\n  \nREGISTER HERE\nUpcoming Arts & Spirituality Workshops in the Fall Series

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: Deepening Our Relationship with God
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to an afternoon experience of Centering Prayer. Whether you are new to Centering Prayer\, are just curious\, or have a regular practice\, please join the welcoming Centering Prayer group at St. Raphaela Center for an experience of Centering Prayer teachings\, group silent prayer\, and discussion about prayer practices. \nCentering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer\, in which we experience God's presence within us\, closer than breathing\, closer than thinking\, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather\, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer. \nPlease come if you are curious about Centering Prayer; if you practice on your own; or would like to learn more about this contemplative practice. \nDate: Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 from 1pm to 4pm \nLocation: House of Hope \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:St. Bonaventure’s “The Soul's Journey Into God”
DESCRIPTION:EcoPhilly offers Saint Bonaventure’s “THE SOUL’S JOURNEY INTO GOD”\nJoin us in making the contemplative spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi a generative force in the Laudato Si’ movement. \nDo we have to engage in contemplation to transcend self and develop a soul? \nEcoPhilly would like to offer you the opportunity to join with us in making the contemplative spirit of St. Francis of Assisi a force in our communities. The significant changes in lifestyles being required of us\, in order to harmonize our lives “with God\, with our neighbor and with the earth\,” involve each of us being “conscious of the bonds with which the Father has linked us to all beings\,” all of creation. Contemplation\, as practiced by St. Francis\, and written about by St. Bonaventure in “The Soul’s Journey Into God\,” can\, we believe\, be a great help to opening the “eyes of our soul” to see these inner bonds or relationships in nature and to create relevant changes in our lives. \nYou are invited to attend the Introductory Session on Saturday\, June 15 from 9:30am to 11:30am\, at St. Raphaela Center\, which will give you an overall outline of the nine sessions and the nature of development involved. Note that this development calls for a partner\, or for “groups of two or three” from each parish or community. All faiths are welcome! \nThe Nine Monthly Sessions will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9:30am to 11:30am\, starting on Saturday\, September 14. \nPlease sign up by contacting John Humphreys at: info@ecophilly.org

SUMMARY:Spiritual Directors Circle: St. Teresa of Ávila
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Directors Circle of the Philadelphia Region presents\, \nSt. Teresa of Ávila - The Journey to the Beloved \nSaint and mystic\, St. Teresa of Ávila understood the process of soul transformation through direct experience in her own life.  In her spiritual masterpiece\, The Interior Castle\, St. Teresa\, using the metaphor of a crystal castle as the soul\, writes about how a person can enter their own soul\, and proceed through succeeding mansions\, toward intimate union with the Beloved.  \nSt. Teresa’s descriptions of the seven mansions offer clear direction on how a soul can continue toward union\, and what one might expect at each stage of the transformative journey.  In this workshop\, we will journey through the seven mansions\, as described by St. Teresa of Ávila. We will explore her mysticism as well as the practicalities of her teachings that might be particularly useful to spiritual directors as we accompany others on their own journey toward the Beloved.  \nThe program will begin with lunch. This workshop will include a plenary session in which Leigh Murray will speak on St. Teresa of Ávila’s mysticism and practical teachings that apply to spiritual direction\, followed by a Q & A. We will then open into small breakout sessions for spiritual directors to journal or discuss the contents of Leigh’s talk and how it applies to the ministry of spiritual direction. We will then gather for a closing practice to finish the day in community. \nThis program is intended for spiritual directors and those in spiritual director formation.  It is hoped you will leave this time with a sense of greater freedom in your practice and help you discover new ways you might help others draw closer to God. \nEvent details: \n9:00 am - St. Raphaela’s welcomes all for optional contemplative time \n11:30 – 1:00 pm - “Catch up" time followed by lunch at 12 \n1:00 – 3:00 pm - Presentation\, Q & A\, Small Groups and Closing \nCost: \n\n$45 includes lunch\n$35 if you are bringing your own lunch\n\nIf you are in need of financial assistance\, please email director@straphaelacenter.org \nRegister HERE\nRegistration is appreciated prior to May 17. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nLeigh feels so honored to accompany sincere seekers on their interior journey to know themselves and God. She trained as a contemplative spiritual director at the Kairos Spiritual Direction program in Lancaster\, PA. Leigh has a particular interest in esoteric teachings and mysticism and has been particularly drawn to the teachings of St. Teresa of Ávila.  She has been studying St. Teresa for quite some time\, and leading experiential journeys into her teachings for many years. To honor the teachings of St. Teresa in a more expansive way\, Leigh is in the early stages of writing a book that helps the modern seeker dive into these powerful teachings on soul transformation in a way that is accessible. She also offers experiential classes that focus on prayer\, meditation\, and contemplation from the view of the Christian Mystics.  \nLeigh trained through St. Raphaela’s to direct the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and is actively accompanying retreatants. She feels so privileged to direct this rich and transformational experience with those that are called to it. She is also a visiting director at St. Raphaela’s and Daylesford Abbey\, offering spiritual direction\, directed retreats and classes on prayer.  \nWhen Leigh isn’t directing\, teaching or writing\, she keeps tabs on her two beautiful daughters\, Hailey and Olivia\, very patient\, husband Bob\, and adorable miniature schnauzer\, Finn.

SUMMARY:Online Enrichment for Spiritual Directors: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction with Nicholas Collura
DESCRIPTION:A Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction \nTrauma-informed care has become an important standard in many of the helping professions. Despite our best intentions\, it is easy for us to retraumatize survivors of violence if we do not adequately reflect on the risks inherent in our practice. For instance\, many spiritual practitioners encourage closed eyes and deep breathing during meditation -- a posture of vulnerability that can feel unsafe for some who have experienced significant powerlessness or harm. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius encourage vivid visual reflection on a bloody and agonizing crucifixion\, which can induce a feeling of helplessness for those who carry the weight of moral injury. Drawing on his experience as a former trauma chaplain at Einstein Medical Center\, Nicholas will lead a discussion on the impact of trauma upon spiritual experience and will explore trauma-informed adaptations of the Spiritual Exercises and of Ignatian spirituality and spiritual direction more broadly. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Women's Weekend: Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:We are the Soil where God's Life Grows\nEvery spring\, the gardener begins the process of readying the soil for the new growing season.  The leftover leaves from last fall must be raked\, the perennials trimmed\, and the hard soil hoed and opened.  Without this hard work\, the soil will not be ready to receive the seeds or the spring rain that will allow the new plants to grow. \nLike a garden\, the soil of our hearts also needs careful preparation followed by regular work so that the seeds of God’s life may grow and flourish in us! \nThrough presentations\, guided meditations\, rituals and sharing\, participants will be invited to join the Divine Gardener in attending to the soil of their hearts\, keeping it open to receive God’s abundant life and blessings. \nThis year\, St. Raphaela Center joins the Handmaids throughout the world in commemorating the 100th anniversary of St. Raphaela’s death\, so it is a special time to celebrate the fruit that her life has produced and open ourselves to allow it to continue being fruitful in us. Raphaela’s total openness and surrender to God\, made her soil fertile and God’s seedbecame within her God’s own life for our world.  She allowed God to trim and prune…her YES\, always at the ready!  Now her seed continues to bear fruit all over the world!  Isn’t this what we want our soil to be?  So\, come and allow the Divine Gardener to do what the Gardener knows best to do with your soil! \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Online Enrichment for Spiritual Directors: Reimagining Sin with Paul Burgmayer
DESCRIPTION:Reimagining Sin: An Exploration Towards Freedom \nConsider the following questions: \n\nIs the word “sin” a comfortable part of your faith vocabulary? Does the word hold significant weight and meaning for you? Or\, conversely\, is it such a burden that you sidestep it in prayer and spiritual direction\, maybe by substituting other words like “addiction” or “brokenness”?\nHow do you understand sin? Is it an action\, a state of consciousness\, an inevitable part of our humanity\, or - as for the Jesuit Jean Danielou - “the measure of our soul's awareness of God"?\nIf a directee raises the topic of sin\, are you at ease exploring it with them?\nFor you\, is sin purely a personal matter\, or do we sin collectively in our faith community\, culture\, or even looking back historically? If you recognize collective sin\, do you try to connect these different levels in your own spiritual life? With your directees?\nIf you are guiding someone through the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises\, do you ever wish for alternative approaches to addressing the concept of sin so that the process feels more liberating for the exertant (and you)?\n\nIf these questions stir something in you\, we invite you to join us as we explore the topic of sin with an goal of helping make “sin” a comfortable part of your faith vocabulary. Together\, we will delve into sin’s changing meanings through history\, consider what constitutes sin in today’s culture\, and how an understanding of sin varies across faith communities. Our journey will lead us to examine the profound and inseparable link between sin and our relationship with God\, discovering how this connection can enhance our spiritual direction practice. \nRegister Here\n  \n \nApril 7\, 2024: Nicholas Collura \nA Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction \nTrauma-informed care has become an important standard in many of the helping professions. SUMMARY:Winter Silent Directed Retreat 2024
DESCRIPTION:A directed retreat at St. Raphaela Center is a time of quiet in order to enhance attentiveness to God's voice within you and in your life. A reverent silence is maintained throughout the Retreat Center at all times including during meals. Each retreatant meets with his/her director daily for approximately 45 minutes. Our staff and visiting Spiritual Directors will be conducting this 7-day retreat.  Each one possesses the necessary skills to guide their directees compassionately and peacefully\, allowing them to listen to God’s voice and to journey closely with their loving God\, both within the retreat setting and going forth into their daily lives.  The number\, nature and length of periods of formal prayer each day will depend upon the ability and needs of the individual and will be determined in conversation with the director. Retreatants are provided suggested scripture passages tailored to their own prayer. Ideally retreatants will have some experience in meditative prayer\, the desire to enter into prolonged silence\, and sufficient self-awareness to recognize their own inward movements. All retreatants have the opportunity for daily liturgy and reconciliation. \nCost: $580 - $675 (depending on room choice) \nRegistration: No later than January 24\, 2023 \nRegister
