SUMMARY:Enrichment Session for Spiritual Directors: SoulCollage® Concepts and Spiritual Direction
DESCRIPTION:Online Enrichment Sessions for Spiritual Directors\nSundays\, 1:00-4:00pm EST - Zoom\nNovember 24\, 2024: Kathy Garrett\, certified SoulCollage® Facilitator \nSoulCollage® Concepts and Spiritual Direction\nSoulCollage® is a psychospiritual collage process founded by family therapist\, Seena Frost in the 1980’s. Since that time\, an international community has grown with over 5000 trained SoulCollage® facilitators who guide people to discover their own creativity\, intuition\, and spiritual insights with SoulCollage®. Founder Seena Frost describes the SoulCollage® process in this way:  \n"The SoulCollage® process starts simply. We cut out and collage images that have called to us and glue them onto 8 by 5-inch mat board cards\, and then\, over time\, we dialogue with these images as if they were conscious beings. Through these "readings" we often receive deep and surprising answers to our life questions. Every step of the process helps us be in touch with feelings\, beliefs\, intuitions\, and wisdom. All are valuable things we might not know are in us until we hear the words coming out of our own mouths\, or until we feel the emotions well up from inside. This is the discovery part of the SoulCollage® process\, we may come to accept ourselves more fully and see value in feelings we previously avoided. We may find ourselves making wiser decisions and believing more consciously in our life purposes. We may step forward more boldly and speak up more clearly; we may enjoy life more and feel greater peace."   \nKathy Garrett\, Ph.D.\, certified SoulCollage® facilitator\, will share her own journey with SoulCollage® and explain the SoulCollage® process. She will also guide us to make and “read” a personal SoulCollage® card and facilitate a conversation about applying concepts from the Soul Collage® process in Spiritual Direction.   \nRegister\n  \nAdditional Sessions \nFebruary 23\, 2025: Paul Burgmayer\, Ph.D \nIdentifying Your Own Voice as a Spiritual Director\nAn afternoon of exploration into your spiritual direction practice \nEver find yourself questioning why you do certain things as a spiritual director? Is it habit? Training? Or simply what you feel is expected? Have you ever considered changing your approach? Maybe you're drawn to being more contemplative.  Or less serious - allowing a bit more laughter into your sessions. Perhaps you're interested in finding a different balance between exploring your directee's prayer life and their everyday life. What if you tried breaking one or two of the rules you learned in training to see what new possibilities arise? \nYour growth as a director doesn’t stop when formal training ends. During our time together\, you'll reflect on the evolution of your practice\, compare notes with other spiritual directors\, and explore adjustments to your practice that might uncover deeper connections with God and the person before you. \nDuring our online session\, topics to be explored include: \n\nHow our training has shaped our practice\nExperiences since our training that have changed us\nAspects of our practice that feel comfortable or uncomfortable now\nA look to historical spiritual direction practices for new perspectives on ours\nConsidering alternative methods like the enneagram or focusing to explore a directee’s inner life\nCrafting a personal plan going forward based on insights gleaned from our discussions\n\nDoes this sound intriguing? Maybe even fun? If so\, join us for an afternoon dedicated to exploring your spiritual direction practice. Let’s see what emerges with lots of introspection\, discussion\, and a little bit of learning. \nRegister here for February 23\n  \nApril 6\, 2025: Tricia Way \nListening as a Radical Act of Love\, Healing\, Justice\, and Transformation \nThis session will offer Spiritual Directors an opportunity to join together in community and reflect deeply on the content\, quality\, and impact of our listening in the work that we do. Tricia Way\, co-author of The Little Book of Listening and facilitator with JUST Listening\, will guide us in thinking about what hinders our ability to listen presently and what can strengthen it. We will also contemplate the radical potential of listening from a place of presence with ourselves and another person\, opening space for love\, healing\, justice\, and transformation to emerge from the listening encounter. There will be time for personal reflection as well as large and small group discussions during our time together in this enrichment session. \nRegister here for April 6

SUMMARY:Busy Person's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Busy Person’s Retreat is an experience designed to support you to connecting with God in your daily\, ordinary life.  During these days\, you will be encouraged to take the time to pray on your own for about 30 minutes each day.  Daily 30 minute meetings with your spiritual director either in-person or via Zoom are also intended to help you as a daily check-in\, ideally bringing you to a deepening of your prayer life. While there are many forms of prayer and everyone prays in their own way\, this retreat experience may help you to better understand the range of prayer practices available to you. Through this program\, you will be introduced to various Ignatian prayer practices\, inspired by the Spiritual Exercises. \nThis is a great opportunity to slow down before things pick up even more during the busyness of the holiday season. Choose either a 3-day or 5-day option. You may also want to spend a day or part of a day in the quiet of the Center.  November 17-19 are all quiet days if you would like to spend time in the chapel or enjoy a meal. \nIf the dates listed don't work for you\, feel free to register suggesting dates in the comments field\, and we'll work to have a director available for you! \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Embodied Prayer: Walking the Labyrinth
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Hibberd will guide us in a beautiful afternoon of getting in touch with our bodies\, using breath-work\, stretches\, and gentle movements as we reflect on our wholeness and reconnect with the natural world. We will walk the outdoor labyrinth\, an ancient spiritual practice\, and take time for quiet reflection and journaling. There will also be the option to use a handheld labyrinth\, which each participant will take home with them. We will conclude by spending some time in sacred sharing and exploring how you can incorporate movement into your daily prayer life at home. \nA labyrinth is an ancient spiritual resource that offers the opportunity to invite people into a deeper spiritual connection by quieting the mind\, opening the heart\, and engaging the body. Walking a labyrinth allows dedicated time and space for prayer\, meditation\, and thoughtful reflection. It is a place to retreat\, restore\, and renew. The labyrinth provides nonjudgmental space for community building\, healing\, and contemplation. They may be found at churches\, synagogues\, hospitals\, wellness centers\, spas\, prisons\, schools and universities\, playgrounds and community centers\, as well as backyards and beaches. \nRegistration deadline: October 27 \n*If you are a student\, full-time volunteer or campus minister\, please use the discount code ART when registering. \n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\nUpcoming Arts & Spirituality Workshops in the Fall Series

SUMMARY:Fall Directed Retreat II
DESCRIPTION:A directed retreat at St. Raphaela Center is a time of quiet in order to enhance attentiveness to God's voice within you and in your life. A reverent silence is maintained throughout the Retreat Center at all times including during meals. Each retreatant meets with his/her director daily for approximately 45 minutes.  Each director possesses the necessary skills to guide their directees compassionately and peacefully\, allowing them to listen to God’s voice and to journey closely with their loving God\, both within the retreat setting and going forth into their daily lives.  The number\, nature and length of periods of formal prayer each day will depend upon the ability and needs of the individual and will be determined in conversation with the director. Retreatants are provided suggested scripture passages tailored to their own prayer. Ideally retreatants will have some experience in meditative prayer\, the desire to enter into prolonged silence\, and sufficient self-awareness to recognize their own inward movements. All retreatants have the opportunity for daily liturgy and reconciliation. \nDate: October 25 to November 1\, 2024 \nTime: Starting at 4:00pm \nCost: $580 - $675 (depending on room choice) \nRegister Here\n\nNEW: Online Option (Online Spiritual Direction ONLY)

SUMMARY:Enrichment Session for Spiritual Directors: When Directees Talk Politics
DESCRIPTION:Online Enrichment Sessions for Spiritual Directors\nSundays\, 1:00-4:00pm EST - Zoom\n***Attend all 4 sessions for $100*** \nOctober 13\, 2024: Nicholas Collura \nWhen Directees Talk Politics\nHave you ever frozen in panic when a directee has brought up politics? Or do you sometimes wonder what role spiritual companionship might play during politically fraught seasons? \nSome of us may regard political conversation in a spiritual accompaniment session as a distraction from soul work or as a transgression of our professional role or ethical code. This workshop recognizes politics as an expression of values that can shape a directee's self-image\, impact spiritual and emotional well-being\, and serve as context for questions of vocation\, justice\, and prayer. How can we help directees to explore connections between their political world-views and their spiritual lives? \nRegister\n  \nAdditional Sessions \nNOTE: If you would like to attend all 4 sessions at a discounted rate ($100 for the entire series)\, there is the possibility to do so when you register for this Oct. 13 session.  Otherwise\, if you would like to attend multiple sessions\, please register for each session individually. \nNovember 24\, 2024: Kathy Garrett\, certified SoulCollage® Facilitator \nSoulCollage® Concepts and Spiritual Direction\nSoulCollage® is a psychospiritual collage process founded by family therapist\, Seena Frost in the 1980’s. DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Directors Circle of the Philadelphia Region presents\, \nThe Labyrinth as a Spiritual Tool: Walking the Labyrinth and Introducing the Experience to Those We Companion \nThe labyrinth is a sacred container where we can quiet the outside noise\, going inside to what touches us in spirit.  Whether used as meditation in motion\, walking with an intention\, or expressing a question or a prayer\, the labyrinth holds us as we Release\, Receive\, and Reflect.  As we navigate the twists and turns--a metaphor for the journey of life--we listen for what comes up in order to tend to ourselves and our spirit.  There are no requirements or exceptions.  Just stay on the path.  \nJoin us for this special time in our community of spiritual directors for a presentation by Rasheeda Hastings at St. Raphaela Center (616 Coopertown Road\, Haverford\, PA 19041)\, as we walk their beautiful labyrinth\, which is located outside\, just in front of the House of Hope.  Dress according to the weather (there will be handheld labyrinths for those who do not wish to physically walk).  We will have time for quiet reflection and then sharing within our whole group before we depart.    \nEvent Details\n \nSchedule for the day: \n9:00 am – 11:30 am: St. Raphaela’s welcomes all for optional contemplative time (arrive at any time)\n11:30 am – 1:00 pm: “Catch up” time followed by lunch at noon\n1:00 pm – 3:00 pm: Presentation beginning in the chapel and then moving to St. Raphaela’s labyrinth\, reconvening in the chapel for group sharing and closing \nCost: \n\n$45 includes lunch\n$35 if you are bringing your own lunch\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Centering Prayer: Deepening Our Relationship with God
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to an afternoon experience of Centering Prayer. Whether you are new to Centering Prayer\, are just curious\, or have a regular practice\, please join the welcoming Centering Prayer group at St. Raphaela Center for an experience of Centering Prayer teachings\, group silent prayer\, and discussion about prayer practices. \nCentering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer\, in which we experience God's presence within us\, closer than breathing\, closer than thinking\, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather\, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer. \nPlease come if you are curious about Centering Prayer; if you practice on your own; or would like to learn more about this contemplative practice. \nDate: Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 from 1pm to 4pm \nLocation: House of Hope \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:St. Bonaventure’s “The Soul's Journey Into God”
DESCRIPTION:EcoPhilly offers Saint Bonaventure’s “THE SOUL’S JOURNEY INTO GOD”\nJoin us in making the contemplative spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi a generative force in the Laudato Si’ movement. \nDo we have to engage in contemplation to transcend self and develop a soul? \nEcoPhilly would like to offer you the opportunity to join with us in making the contemplative spirit of St. Francis of Assisi a force in our communities. The significant changes in lifestyles being required of us\, in order to harmonize our lives “with God\, with our neighbor and with the earth\,” involve each of us being “conscious of the bonds with which the Father has linked us to all beings\,” all of creation. Contemplation\, as practiced by St. Francis\, and written about by St. Bonaventure in “The Soul’s Journey Into God\,” can\, we believe\, be a great help to opening the “eyes of our soul” to see these inner bonds or relationships in nature and to create relevant changes in our lives. \nYou are invited to attend the Introductory Session on Saturday\, June 15 from 9:30am to 11:30am\, at St. Raphaela Center\, which will give you an overall outline of the nine sessions and the nature of development involved. Note that this development calls for a partner\, or for “groups of two or three” from each parish or community. All faiths are welcome! \nThe Nine Monthly Sessions will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9:30am to 11:30am\, starting on Saturday\, September 14. \nPlease sign up by contacting John Humphreys at: info@ecophilly.org

SUMMARY:Spiritual Directors Circle: St. Teresa of Ávila
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Directors Circle of the Philadelphia Region presents\, \nSt. Teresa of Ávila - The Journey to the Beloved \nSaint and mystic\, St. Teresa of Ávila understood the process of soul transformation through direct experience in her own life.  In her spiritual masterpiece\, The Interior Castle\, St. Teresa\, using the metaphor of a crystal castle as the soul\, writes about how a person can enter their own soul\, and proceed through succeeding mansions\, toward intimate union with the Beloved.  \nSt. Teresa’s descriptions of the seven mansions offer clear direction on how a soul can continue toward union\, and what one might expect at each stage of the transformative journey.  In this workshop\, we will journey through the seven mansions\, as described by St. Teresa of Ávila. We will explore her mysticism as well as the practicalities of her teachings that might be particularly useful to spiritual directors as we accompany others on their own journey toward the Beloved.  \nThe program will begin with lunch. This workshop will include a plenary session in which Leigh Murray will speak on St. Teresa of Ávila’s mysticism and practical teachings that apply to spiritual direction\, followed by a Q & A. We will then open into small breakout sessions for spiritual directors to journal or discuss the contents of Leigh’s talk and how it applies to the ministry of spiritual direction. We will then gather for a closing practice to finish the day in community. \nThis program is intended for spiritual directors and those in spiritual director formation.  It is hoped you will leave this time with a sense of greater freedom in your practice and help you discover new ways you might help others draw closer to God. \nEvent details: \n9:00 am - St. Raphaela’s welcomes all for optional contemplative time \n11:30 – 1:00 pm - “Catch up" time followed by lunch at 12 \n1:00 – 3:00 pm - Presentation\, Q & A\, Small Groups and Closing \nCost: \n\n$45 includes lunch\n$35 if you are bringing your own lunch\n\nIf you are in need of financial assistance\, please email director@straphaelacenter.org \nRegister HERE\nRegistration is appreciated prior to May 17. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nLeigh feels so honored to accompany sincere seekers on their interior journey to know themselves and God. She trained as a contemplative spiritual director at the Kairos Spiritual Direction program in Lancaster\, PA. Leigh has a particular interest in esoteric teachings and mysticism and has been particularly drawn to the teachings of St. Teresa of Ávila.  She has been studying St. Teresa for quite some time\, and leading experiential journeys into her teachings for many years. To honor the teachings of St. Teresa in a more expansive way\, Leigh is in the early stages of writing a book that helps the modern seeker dive into these powerful teachings on soul transformation in a way that is accessible. She also offers experiential classes that focus on prayer\, meditation\, and contemplation from the view of the Christian Mystics.  \nLeigh trained through St. Raphaela’s to direct the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and is actively accompanying retreatants. She feels so privileged to direct this rich and transformational experience with those that are called to it. She is also a visiting director at St. Raphaela’s and Daylesford Abbey\, offering spiritual direction\, directed retreats and classes on prayer.  \nWhen Leigh isn’t directing\, teaching or writing\, she keeps tabs on her two beautiful daughters\, Hailey and Olivia\, very patient\, husband Bob\, and adorable miniature schnauzer\, Finn.

SUMMARY:Online Enrichment for Spiritual Directors: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction with Nicholas Collura
DESCRIPTION:A Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction \nTrauma-informed care has become an important standard in many of the helping professions. Despite our best intentions\, it is easy for us to retraumatize survivors of violence if we do not adequately reflect on the risks inherent in our practice. For instance\, many spiritual practitioners encourage closed eyes and deep breathing during meditation -- a posture of vulnerability that can feel unsafe for some who have experienced significant powerlessness or harm. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius encourage vivid visual reflection on a bloody and agonizing crucifixion\, which can induce a feeling of helplessness for those who carry the weight of moral injury. Drawing on his experience as a former trauma chaplain at Einstein Medical Center\, Nicholas will lead a discussion on the impact of trauma upon spiritual experience and will explore trauma-informed adaptations of the Spiritual Exercises and of Ignatian spirituality and spiritual direction more broadly. \nREGISTER
