SUMMARY:Sound & Silence: the art of listening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special experience of the senses in our Chapel. We will engage in the art of listening\, with sound and silence\, inviting participants to improvise sound\, with the direction and gentle facilitation of Eric Hollander\, our current Musician in Residence. No previous musical or improvising experience is required for your participation. \nWe will gather as a small ensemble of listeners so as to learn how to free the voice of the spiritual life\, express our journey in sound\, create listening spaces for one another\, and reflect together on the sonic experience. Improvisation (making sound with provided instruments) brings us to a moment of vulnerability and openness – and also to the edge of silence: into which a voice burgeons\, moves\, and comes to rest. \n“As a performing musician with experience in many different styles and contexts\, I have had the joy of finding myself often embedded in moments of improvisation. Over the years\, these moments of freedom became increasingly important to me and eventually opened up the possibility of engaging in music as prayer. As a musician\, this was an important achievement.” – Eric Hollander \n*Free-Will Donations are appreciated to support our ongoing arts programming. \nRegister here by July 21

SUMMARY:The Retreat That Never Ends: The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola
DESCRIPTION:This 5-day preached retreat will provide space for people of all backgrounds to experience Ignatian Spirituality. We will begin to explore the Spiritual Exercises through a series of daily presentations\, along with opportunities for reflection and prayer. This compilation of meditations\, prayers\, and contemplative practices were developed by St. Ignatius Loyola to help us deepen our relationship with God. The Spiritual Exercises grew out of Ignatius’s personal experience\, as someone seeking to grow in union with God and discern God’s Will. The retreat is divided into four parts. The first part will offer a time of reflection on our lives in light of God’s boundless love for us and a call to follow him. The meditations and prayers of the second part will teach us how to follow Christ\, as his disciples. During the third part\, we will meditate on Christ’s Last Supper\, Passion\, and death as the ultimate expression of God’s love. In the fourth part\, we will meditate on Jesus’ resurrection and his encounters with his disciples. As we walk with the risen Christ\, we set out as pilgrims on the road to love and serve him in concrete ways in our lives in the world\, through an integration of contemplation in action\, prayer and service\, guided by our emotions and reason. \nRegister here by July 1

SUMMARY:A Hidden Wholeness: Discovering God Through Photography
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and God is shining through it all the time. God manifests Himself everywhere\, in everything – in people and in things and in nature and in events … The only thing is we don’t see it … I have no program for this seeing. It is only given. But the gate of heaven is everywhere. \nThomas Merton\, OCSO \n  \nThis workshop explores how photography can deepen our awareness of the Sacred through the art of photography. We will look at some examples of Merton’s photography and then engage our creative eye in an attempt to capture some of the Divine\, as focused in our personal images. In this afternoon gathering\, you are invited to take some time away to allow our perceptions to expand and become clearer. It will be a journey of attentiveness and presence\, as we capture our photos on the beautiful grounds of St. Raphaela Center. We will then share our efforts with our group\, providing some insight to why we chose these particular images and how it informs our spirituality. Photography can become our prayer\, reflecting the Glory of God. \nRegister Here by June 20

SUMMARY:Guided Retreat: Praying with Our Senses
DESCRIPTION:Stop\, Look\, and Listen...and Smell\, and Taste\, and Touch: Praying with Our Senses\n“The five senses are the ministers of our soul.” - Leonardo DaVinci \nIn his Spiritual Exercises\, St. Ignatius of Loyola recommends that we pray with scripture by putting ourselves in the scene and contemplating the scene with our senses - what do we see\, hear\, smell\, etc.? During this guided retreat\, we will explore\, engage\, and pray with a different sense each day and allow our senses to minister to our souls. Mary Pollini will offer input\, including how our senses “work” and have developed over millennia\, stories relating to our senses\, and sensory experiences.  \nSuggestions for prayer relating to the day’s sense will be provided\, including  exploring sensual memories\, scripture passages\, poems\, and reflections. Each day will conclude with the group coming together to gather the graces of the day\, to share how God was present in prayer\, and to honor each sense. Retreatants may also schedule optional individual spiritual conversation/direction with Mary.   \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Writing can be a spiritual act\, a way for us to process our experiences and engage in conversations with God. In this workshop\, Catholic writer John Dougherty (America Magazine\, National Catholic Reporter\, Jesuit Media Lab) will offer some skills for bringing our spiritual stories to life on the page and\, even more importantly\, some time and space to write. \nFlow of the Afternoon: \n1:00-2:00 - "Bringing Our Spiritual Stories to Life" --- John Dougherty sets the tone of our afternoon\, shares tips of his own writing process and contextualizes why writing is indeed\, a very spiritual practice!\n\n2:00-3:15 - Independent Writing --- Settle into a desk in our art studio or a bench on our grounds. Walk the labyrinth or swing in a hammock. Spend 75 minutes writing without distraction. You can bring your own prompt or project to make progress on -- or use one of the prompts provided to  you by John.\n\n3:15-4:00 - Sharing and Wrap Up --- Listen to the written words of others and share your own if you'd like! Enjoy a communal reflection on: "What did I notice during those 75 minutes? What thoughts arose in me? and Where did my mind wander? Finally\, set a writing intention for the spring and voice it out loud in a supportive circle.\n  \nRegister by April 3\n*If you are a student\, full-time volunteer or campus minister\, please use the discount code ART when registering.

SUMMARY:Meeting Christ in Prayer: 18th Annotation Group (8 Weeks)
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Christ in Prayer is modeled on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola\, which is a tried-and-true method of spiritual renewal. By means of prayer\, reflection and faith sharing\, Meeting Christ in Prayer will introduce you to various ways of praying and will help you to form regular habits of prayer\, providing you with an opportunity to encounter Christ anew\, while experiencing the support of your sisters and brothers on your spiritual journey. \nNo prior experience in praying with others is needed for you to enjoy and benefit from Meeting Christ in Prayer. What the program asks of you is your personal commitment to faithfully spend at least twenty to thirty minutes in daily prayer\, to keep a journal of thoughts and reflections during this prayer time and to attend eight\, one-hour-and-fifteen-minute weekly meetings of small-group prayer\, discussion and faith sharing. \nEach week\, for eight weeks\, you will meet in a small group of six to ten participants to pray together and grow in faith. At these meetings\, members will be invited to share a significant experience they had during their prayer or daily life that week—something that moved or challenged them\, caused a new awareness\, or indicated a connection between their life and the life of Christ. This particular type of discussion—commonly known as “faith sharing”—is a form of spiritual conversation and is the core of the weekly meeting. Sharing is voluntary\, but highly encouraged. Regular attendance at meetings is expected\, however\, if you miss a meeting\, you can keep up with the group by using your participant guide. \nThe schedule of this series will align with the liturgical rhythms of Holy Week and Easter\, helping to enter more deeply into those experiences. \nTuesdays from 7-8:30pm\, in-person at St. Raphaela Center \nMarch 18 to May 6 (8 Weeks) \nFacilitators: Joe Schad\, SJ & Kathy Benham\, IHM \nCost: $75 (8 sessions; includes participant guide) \nRegister Here by March 10

SUMMARY:Discern with Us: Sharing Hopes for Our Church
DESCRIPTION:On the heels of the global Synod on Communion\, Participation\, and Mission\, which proclaimed with Magisterial authority that “The way to promote a synodal Church is to foster greater participation of the People of God in decision-making processes (#87 in the Final Report)\, Archbishop Perez asks in his January 2025 pastoral letter for our “voices and presence… as we navigate our way forward together as the Church of Philadelphia.” \nJust as Pope Francis called all to participate in the Synod\, Archbishop Perez is calling on all in the Archdiocese to join the discernment - listening for God - about where the Church in Philadelphia needs to be and how we need to be church in those places. \nJoin us for a community conversation on Sunday\, March 16th from 1:00 to 3:00pm to share and listen to hopes for our church!  If you can't make it and want to participate in the discernment\, send us an email at missionarydiscipleship@straphaelacenter.org \nRSVP HERE by March 15\n  \nLetter to the Editor | Philadelphia Inquirer | Published February 21\, 2025 \n\n\n"As a Catholic sister\, I’m heartened by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez’s plan for the archdiocese “to meet people where they are.” As director of St. Raphaela Center in Haverford\, I encounter people from many backgrounds\, including former Catholics. I minister to wounds of mistrust\, especially in women\, as people share experiences of not feeling spiritually nourished nor a sense of belonging\, either for themselves or those they love. There is incredible potential in this moment for the archdiocese to heal these wounds by becoming a credible witness of welcome.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can do that by growing roles in and through the proposed process for women and so many others who have been prevented from sharing their ministerial gifts. Opening a transformative space for authentic encounter requires that we demonstrate to those who have felt abandoned by the Catholic church that their presence and experiences are truly valued in this pastoral process. This requires offering safe spaces for honest sharing and deep listening. I’m eager to partner in the hard work it will take to become a community that takes people’s experiences seriously by allowing them to affect us\, welcoming them in a shared search to walk together on the journey of faith."\n\n\n\n\n\n- Sr. Michelle Cimaroli\, Director of St. Raphaela Center

SUMMARY:Awaken to Your Spiritual Story: Women's Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Awaken to Your Spiritual Story is a reflective and nurturing retreat for women of all ages to engage with their creativity\, self-expression\, and intuition to discover greater spiritual meaning in their life stories.    \nEach life story has times of ease and love\, mystery and drama\, and challenge and sorrow. Exploring these experiences through contemplative\, creative activities helps us experience the many ways God leads and accompanies us through all types of life experiences. When we delve into our ordinary lives to reveal our sacred stories\, we find surprising new perspectives and insights that knit our experiences into a whole. This helps us to trust more deeply in the movement of God and the Holy Spirit and to open to new practices for going forward and discerning our path. \nDuring the weekend\, we will explore several creative\, contemplative practices to discover the storylines of our path.  You will learn to do SoulCollage®\, a surprising collage process that sparks intuition and reveals unexpected insights about you. You will be introduced to simple creative processes for journal reflections\, playful movement\, contemplative nature walks\, and a collaborative art activity.  These experiences will guide each woman toward discovering new meaning\, depth\, and sacred essence in the stories of her life. \nFacilitators will guide the weekend. Each brings experience in creative spiritual methods and a heart-centered approach to group spiritual facilitation.   \nThese supportive facilitators will guide small group sharing and storytelling for the sacred work of discovering and telling our stories.  \nYou will leave with a deeper connection to yourself and your sacred path\, as well as a deep appreciation for the journeys of other women.  You will have a personal  expression of your story\, which might be a collage\, a story or a poem\, a symbol\, or a piece of art. Importantly\,  you will have new creative practices to continue on your spiritual path. \n  \nRegister Here\n  \nFacilitator Bios:  \nKathy Garrett\, Ph.D.\, is a SoulCollage@ facilitator\, retreat guide\, team and leadership coach\, consultant\, and professor.  In each of her roles and in her own life\, she is drawn to the path of wholeness\, which calls for inner exploration\, discovery\, and ongoing release of outmoded stories and beliefs. She approaches this work with a light-hearted spirit and delight in the path of discovery. Her prayer practices are at the center of her work\, supporting her connection with the Divine Spirit and connecting with others from a heart space.  She is a devoted practitioner of Centering Prayer\, SoulCollage®\, journaling\, wide and deep reading\, sitting in a sacred circle for storytelling\, and wandering in nature for inspiration. Kathy also works with the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Mission Advancement.  She is drawn to their welcoming charism and the experience of being met with their deep\, unconditional love and acceptance.   \nAndria Seneviratne (she/her) is a seeker whose mission is to open hearts and heal the fragmented relationships between ourselves\, God\, and each other. She is a sacred space holder with experience as a facilitator\, spiritual companion\, and strategy consultant. Andria's work centers around tapping into our divine essence and returning to our compassionate\, loving God by living into our full humanity in body\, mind\, and spirit. Andrea serves as a catalyst for deep change in each of her different roles.  In her practice\, she embraces her lived experience as an immigrant\, woman\, Asian American\, athlete\, and fellow traveler to support others in being their true selves.  \nBecky McIntyre (she/her) is a community artist\, muralist\, and linocut printmaker in Philadelphia. Through her work\, often collective in nature\, she hopes to bring awareness to sociopolitical issues and the transformative and healing nature of art and to activate and inspire new ways of being. She collaborates regularly with St. Raphaela Center\, recently as artist-in-residence. She works with local and national collectives of educators and young people in higher education around the Global Synod and facilitates collective synodal art and synodal listening\, through the process of Conversations in the Spirit.

SUMMARY:Enrichment Session for Spiritual Directors: Identifying Your Own Voice as a Spiritual Director
DESCRIPTION:Online Enrichment Sessions for Spiritual Directors\nSundays\, 1:00-4:00pm EST - Zoom\nFebruary 23\, 2025: Paul Burgmayer\, Ph.D \nIdentifying Your Own Voice as a Spiritual Director\nAn afternoon of exploration into your spiritual direction practice \nEver find yourself questioning why you do certain things as a spiritual director? Is it habit? Training? Or simply what you feel is expected? Have you ever considered changing your approach? Maybe you're drawn to being more contemplative.  Or less serious - allowing a bit more laughter into your sessions. Perhaps you're interested in finding a different balance between exploring your directee's prayer life and their everyday life. What if you tried breaking one or two of the rules you learned in training to see what new possibilities arise? \nYour growth as a director doesn’t stop when formal training ends. During our time together\, you'll reflect on the evolution of your practice\, compare notes with other spiritual directors\, and explore adjustments to your practice that might uncover deeper connections with God and the person before you. \nDuring our online session\, topics to be explored include: \n\nHow our training has shaped our practice\nExperiences since our training that have changed us\nAspects of our practice that feel comfortable or uncomfortable now\nA look to historical spiritual direction practices for new perspectives on ours\nConsidering alternative methods like the enneagram or focusing to explore a directee’s inner life\nCrafting a personal plan going forward based on insights gleaned from our discussions\n\nDoes this sound intriguing? Maybe even fun? If so\, join us for an afternoon dedicated to exploring your spiritual direction practice. Let’s see what emerges with lots of introspection\, discussion\, and a little bit of learning. \nRegister\n\nAdditional Session\nApril 6\, 2025: Tricia Way \nListening as a Radical Act of Love\, Healing\, Justice\, and Transformation \nThis session will offer Spiritual Directors an opportunity to join together in community and reflect deeply on the content\, quality\, and impact of our listening in the work that we do. Tricia Way\, co-author of The Little Book of Listening and facilitator with JUST Listening\, will guide us in thinking about what hinders our ability to listen presently and what can strengthen it. We will also contemplate the radical potential of listening from a place of presence with ourselves and another person\, opening space for love\, healing\, justice\, and transformation to emerge from the listening encounter. There will be time for personal reflection as well as large and small group discussions during our time together in this enrichment session. \nRegister here for April 6

SUMMARY:Taizé Prayer with Adoration
DESCRIPTION:"[In the cross] we see definitively revealed the only divine omnipotence that can claim to correspond with a God of love: an omnipotence whose face bears the expression of a limitless love that nothing can quench\, discourage or prevent from pouring itself out inexhaustibly" (Brother Emmanuel of Taizé). \nThe practice of contemplative prayer opens us to encounter and to be formed by this love that is poured out. Taizé worship is a contemplative communal prayer service that consists of meditative singing\, Scripture reading\, and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state. It is an international movement\, inspired by an ecumenical interspiritual community in France. At St. Raphaela Center\, we integrate our charism of Eucharistic Adoration with this contemplative worship. \nCome to join us for a monthly Taizé prayer\, including Eucharistic Adoration that will extend in silence until 9pm after the hour-long Taizé service. \nDates: 2nd Wednesday of the month from 7:30-8:30pm. Adoration continues until 9pm. \n All are welcome - no reservations required.

A reverent silence is maintained throughout the Retreat Center at all times including during meals. Each retreatant meets with his/her director daily for approximately 45 minutes. Our Spiritual Directors on staff will be conducting this 6-day retreat.  Each one possesses the necessary skills to guide their directees compassionately and peacefully\, allowing them to listen to God’s voice and to journey closely with their loving God\, both within the retreat setting and going forth into their daily lives.  The number\, nature and length of periods of formal prayer each day will depend upon the ability and needs of the individual and will be determined in conversation with the director. Retreatants are provided suggested scripture passages tailored to their own prayer. Ideally retreatants will have some experience in meditative prayer\, the desire to enter into prolonged silence\, and sufficient self-awareness to recognize their own inward movements. All retreatants have the opportunity for daily liturgy and reconciliation. \nPlease note: Retreatant bedooms will be in the House of Hope. During the weekend\, retreatants will need to make a short walk across the parking lot for meals and liturgy in the Main House. Spiritual Direction may also take place in the Main House during each day of the retreat. \nDate: January 20 – 27\, 2025 \nTime: Starting at 4:00pm \nCost: $580 \nRegistration: No later than January 15\, 2025 \nRegister Here
