SUMMARY:Winter Silent Directed Retreat 2024
DESCRIPTION:A directed retreat at St. Raphaela Center is a time of quiet in order to enhance attentiveness to God's voice within you and in your life. A reverent silence is maintained throughout the Retreat Center at all times including during meals. Each retreatant meets with his/her director daily for approximately 45 minutes. Our staff and visiting Spiritual Directors will be conducting this 7-day retreat.  Each one possesses the necessary skills to guide their directees compassionately and peacefully\, allowing them to listen to God’s voice and to journey closely with their loving God\, both within the retreat setting and going forth into their daily lives.  The number\, nature and length of periods of formal prayer each day will depend upon the ability and needs of the individual and will be determined in conversation with the director. Retreatants are provided suggested scripture passages tailored to their own prayer. Ideally retreatants will have some experience in meditative prayer\, the desire to enter into prolonged silence\, and sufficient self-awareness to recognize their own inward movements. All retreatants have the opportunity for daily liturgy and reconciliation. \nCost: $580 - $675 (depending on room choice) \nRegistration: No later than January 24\, 2023 \nRegister

SUMMARY:Creator of the Stars of Night: An Eco-Spiritual Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Advent Guided Retreat Weekend \nSince the publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’\, the Church as a whole has begun to take more seriously the call to develop the eco-spiritual dimension of our faith: that is\, our spiritual connection to God whose presence is made manifest in the natural world. How might we do so in this Advent season? This weekend retreat will provide some inspiration. Together\, we will explore connections between traditional Advent themes and eco-spiritual concepts. How can our Advent waiting be deepened by the scale of “deep time” or cosmic history? How can the vulnerable Christ-child and the fragility of endangered species in the web of life illuminate one another’s significance? What is the social justice dimension of Advent and Christmas\, and what can we learn from it about our responsibility for the planet? And most centrally of all: how can this Christian celebration of the Incarnation lead us to see God more clearly in all things? \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Advent Day of Prayer: The O Antiphons
DESCRIPTION:The O Antiphons have been part of Advent worship since the 8th century with one antiphon recited each day from December 17 – 23. Each antiphon\, based on a title for the Messiah and a passage from the prophets\, expresses our longing for the Messiah to come and redeem God’s people. We will look at 2 of the antiphons\, the corresponding Old Testament passages and verses from O come\, O come\, Emmanuel which is based on the antiphons. Times of quiet reflection\, written and art journaling and group discussion will help us discern how we can prepare for Christ’s coming in our lives and in our world today. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available\, and the Eucharist will be celebrated. \n  \nAbout Our Facilitator: \nKaren Jantzi started her professional career as a nurse. Her nursing experience includes school nurse in segregated Mississippi public schools\, a psychiatric inpatient crisis unit\, mental health consultant for developmentally disabled adults\, and mental health advocate and educator for congregations and denominational groups. She participated in spiritual formation programs during this time\, knowing she wanted to deepen her connection with God. She met her spiritual director\, a retired Jesuit priest\, during one of the programs. Fr. Ed introduced her to and trained her in Ignatian spirituality. Her combined interest in psychology\, spirituality\, education\, theology and human development led her to Temple University where she received a PhD in spiritual formation and religious education. She taught Human Development in Temple’s education department for 13 years.  During this time she began developing and teaching adult classes and leading retreats in her congregation. She also led spiritual direction groups with young adult women. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband\, Joe\, a retired teacher in the Philadelphia school district. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Online Enrichment Series for Spiritual Directors
DESCRIPTION:Online Enrichment Sessions for Spiritual Directors \nSundays\, 1:00-4:00pm \nCost: $30 per session \n***Attend all 4 sessions for $100*** \n \nOctober 1\, 2023: Nicholas Collura \nHead\, Heart\, Gut: Enneagram Wisdom on the Limits and Possibilities of Directees' Personality Structures  \n"Pursuing spiritual work without working on our personality typically results in a lack of resolution of deep-seated issues and a lack of true integration of our spirituality\," writes Sandra Maitri in her book The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram. "This perspective can profoundly shift our understanding." In this enrichment session\, we will discuss how our approach as spiritual companions might differ according to whether our directees lead with their head\, heart\, or gut centers of intelligence. While some knowledge of the Enneagram may be helpful\, and those who know the Enneagram will find ways to use it to deepen their direction practice\, our conversation will also be quite accessible to those without Enneagram experience\, as we will be focusing on easily understood centers of intelligence rather than on the nuances of each of the nine Enneagram "types." Likewise\, because this session will consider broad dynamics of the human personality\, one need not know the Enneagram "types" of one's directees to benefit from the wisdom the system can offer us as spiritual companions.  \nRegister Here (use this registration link to also register for all 4 sessions at the discounted rate)\n  \n \nNovember 12\, 2023: Leigh Murray \nHow the Use of Active Imagination and Spiritual Senses Invites Deeper Transformation in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises \nSaint Ignatius believed that the imagination is a “faculty of the soul” and a way for God to communicate with us. Thus\, in the Spiritual Exercises\, he guides us to use these aspects of ourselves\, telling us: “By the imagination\, the soul can render an object present and\, as it were\, see it\, hear it\, taste it and so on. So that to apply this faculty of the soul and the five senses to a truth of religion (according as it is susceptible of it)\, or to a mystery of our Lord Jesus Christ\, is what is called application of the senses” (Salai\, 119). \nIt is through this encouragement to use our active imagination and “spiritual senses” that Saint Ignatius invites us to a deeper understanding of who and what we are. We are invited to see in new ways and to take off the blinders that we may have been wearing\, allowing us to find healing and restoration\, thus becoming integrated\, wholesome human beings. \nIn this enrichment session we will explore the importance of the imagination and spiritual senses in healing and transformation as Spiritual Directors. We will learn how St. Ignatius’ use of imagination inspired Carl Jung to study The Exercises and create a deep body of work around Active Imagination and how it is useful in personal transformation. We will have a look at how to invite our retreatants into using their active imagination and spiritual senses with a deeper sense for what we are doing\, and why. \nWe will also check in with our own experiences with our imagination and spiritual senses through practices and small group discussion. We will take some time to gather the experiences of the group and generate some best practices around how to best invite and encourage our retreatants into their own imaginations and spiritual senses\, in ways that are accessible and allow for deeper spiritual transformation on their individual journeys. \nContent for this enrichment session will be curated from Leigh’s article\, published in the December\, 2022 issue of Presence. If you would like to read the article before participating in the session\, please email director@straphaelacenter.org for a copy of the article. \nRegister Here\n  \n \nFebruary 4\, 2024: Paul Burgmayer \nReimagining Sin: An Exploration Towards Freedom \nConsider the following questions: \n\nIs the word “sin” a comfortable part of your faith vocabulary? Does the word hold significant weight and meaning for you? Or\, conversely\, is it such a burden that you sidestep it in prayer and spiritual direction\, maybe by substituting other words like “addiction” or “brokenness”?\nHow do you understand sin? Is it an action\, a state of consciousness\, an inevitable part of our humanity\, or - as for the Jesuit Jean Danielou - “the measure of our soul's awareness of God"?\nIf a directee raises the topic of sin\, are you at ease exploring it with them?\nFor you\, is sin purely a personal matter\, or do we sin collectively in our faith community\, culture\, or even looking back historically? If you recognize collective sin\, do you try to connect these different levels in your own spiritual life? With your directees?\nIf you are guiding someone through the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises\, do you ever wish for alternative approaches to addressing the concept of sin so that the process feels more liberating for the exertant (and you)?\n\nIf these questions stir something in you\, we invite you to join us as we explore the topic of sin with an goal of helping make “sin” a comfortable part of your faith vocabulary. Together\, we will delve into sin’s changing meanings through history\, consider what constitutes sin in today’s culture\, and how an understanding of sin varies across faith communities. Our journey will lead us to examine the profound and inseparable link between sin and our relationship with God\, discovering how this connection can enhance our spiritual direction practice. \nRegister Here\n  \n \nApril 7\, 2024: Nicholas Collura \nA Trauma-Informed Approach to Ignatian Spiritual Direction \nTrauma-informed care has become an important standard in many of the helping professions. Despite our best intentions\, it is easy for us to retraumatize survivors of violence if we do not adequately reflect on the risks inherent in our practice. For instance\, many spiritual practitioners encourage closed eyes and deep breathing during meditation -- a posture of vulnerability that can feel unsafe for some who have experienced significant powerlessness or harm. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius encourage vivid visual reflection on a bloody and agonizing crucifixion\, which can induce a feeling of helplessness for those who carry the weight of moral injury. In the enrichment session\, we will discuss the impact of trauma upon spiritual experience and will explore trauma-informed adaptations of the Spiritual Exercises and of Ignatian spirituality and spiritual direction more broadly \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Sacred Stories: Pilgrimage & Sharing Our Gifts in Our Church
DESCRIPTION:Framed through the lens of pilgrimage\, this weekend retreat will flow with soulful activities and intentional dialogue. During this season of living synodality in the Catholic Church\, we are invited to bear witness to one another and discern our individual and shared vision for the role of women in the Church. We invite you to lean into community\, meet St. Phoebe\, explore the rich documents being generated by the Synod process\, and join in prayer together. \nThese days of retreat will be framed by prayer\, learning and witness. How can we pray for our Church in this time of Synod? How can we learn about synodality? How can we make space for women to witness their faith? \nThis is a Synodal Retreat for women. We will be listening and witnessing one another. \n  \nRetreat Weekend: \nRetreat begins at 5:00pm Friday and ends at 11:00am on Sunday.  Retreatants will experience embodied prayer\, small group dialogue\, time for individual reflection and creative prayer experiences.  The retreat space will be opened to the public for a St. Phoebe prayer service on Saturday\, where we will celebrate together women's gifts in the Church. \n  \nDay Retreat: \nIndividuals who are unable to attend the full weekend retreat are welcome to join for a day retreat on Saturday\, 8am to 4:30pm. \n  \nWeekend Retreat Registration\nDay Retreat Registration\n  \nWho is St. Phoebe?

SUMMARY:Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life
DESCRIPTION:The 19th Annotation\nThis retreat follows the entire 30-day Spiritual Exercises retreat\, but is adapted to be made during “daily life”\, that is\, without taking a month off of work or studies or family.  Retreatants meet once a week with their spiritual director (in-person or online) to review their prayer and to receive material for the following week of prayer.  It is expected that the retreatant would set aside 1 hour of prayer a day\, plus 15 minutes for the examen at the end of the day.  While it is usually better to begin this retreat in the early fall so that the retreat follows the flow of the liturgical year\, a 19th annotation retreat may be begun at any time during the year.  This can be determined with your spiritual director. \nA sliding payment scale is available. \nContact Sr. Michelle Cimaroli\, acj by email (mcimaroli@straphaelacenter.org) or phone (610-642-5715) for more information about the 19th Annotation. \nClick HERE to submit an inquiry about registering for the 19th Annotation.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Directors Circle: Teilhard and the Five Mystical Circles
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Directors Circle of the Philadelphia Region presents\, \nTeilhard and the Five Mystical Circles \nProgram Description: \nMystic scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin\, SJ envisioned how\, through evolution\, creation is moving closer to God. In his essay entitled The Mystical Milieu\, Teilhard writes about his ascent through five mystical circles\, moving more intimately into the heart of the universe and the Heart of God. As a scientist and mystic\, Teilhard's descriptions of the Divine in each circle speak to a different perspective through which one might experience and connect with God. In this workshop\, we will journey through Teilhard's five mystical circles while exploring how the same evolutionary fire at the heart of the cosmos is burning within the human person\, drawing us to greater wholeness. \nThe event will start with lunch\, then Dr. Del Rossi will speak and there will be ample time for Q & A. We will then break into small groups for the opportunity to reflect on the key teachings from Dr. Del Rossi’s presentation and how these pertain to the ministry of spiritual direction.  The small groups will focus on contemplative discussion\, journaling\, and artwork. This program is intended for spiritual directors and those that are in spiritual director formation. \nEvent details: \nMay 15th at St. Raphaela Center in Haverford\, PA \n9:00 am - St. Raphaela Center welcomes all for optional contemplative time \n11:30 – 12:30 pm - “Catch up" time followed by lunch at 12. \n12:30 – 3:00 pm - Presentation\, Q & A\, Small Groups and Closing \nCost: \n$45 - includes lunch \n$35 - bring your own lunch \nRegistration is appreciated prior to May 9.  For additional details and to register\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Encounters with Jesus: An Ignatian Contemplation Prayer Series for Lent
DESCRIPTION:During his public ministry\, Jesus did more than just preach.  In fact some of the best lessons we can learn from him are those taught through his encounters with the different people he met on the road.  In his travels\, Jesus met the poor and the rich\, the sick and the healthy.  He not only responded to those who reached out to him\, but also knew how to reach out to those who were unaware of what they needed from Him.\n\nThis 3-part series will highlight some of these encounters and\, by using St. Ignatius of Loyola’s imaginative form of prayer\, we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves fully in each encounter – we will be there -- and have our own private meeting with Jesus!  Whether you’re a seasoned veteran in Ignatian prayer or are engaging with it for the first time\, this series will aim to help enrich your life of prayer and your relationship with Jesus through guided practice in this unique prayer form.  Adoration will be available in the Chapel following each gathering until 5:40pm\, for additional time for personal prayer.\n\nMarch 5 from 3pm to 4:30pm: Introduction to the Series\n\nThis session will be recorded for those who are unable to make it and want an introduction to this prayer form for any of the following sessions. There will be no introduction to Ignatian Contemplation in either the 2nd or 3rd sessions.\n\n Ignatian Method of Contemplative Prayer\n The Samaritan Woman at the Well\n\nMarch 12 from 3pm to 4pm: Readiness to Hear Jesus’ Invitation\n\n The Paralytic at the Pool\n Jesus Meets Zacchaeus\n\nApril 2 from 3pm to 4pm: Courage to be Whole - Two Courageous Women\n\n Woman Bent Over\n Woman with the Hemorrhage\n\nPlease bring a Bible and a journal with you. \n\nCost: $10 per session   \n\nFull series (3 sessions): $25\n\nUniversity students or members of post-grad service programs:\n\nCost: $5 per session   \n\nFull series (3 sessions): $10\nRegister

SUMMARY:Enrichment Days for Spiritual Directors and Other Ministers: Contemplative Atmosphere / Evocative Approach to Spiritual Direction
DESCRIPTION:The spiritual director strives to create an environment making it possible for one’s directee to notice more clearly God’s self-communication and one’s reaction and response to it.  The spiritual director does this in two ways: \n…contemplative atmosphere \n                        …evocative approach \nThis Professional Development afternoon will take an experiential approach to fostering valuable skills in a spiritual director.  Through input\, reflection and small group sharing\, we will engage in conversation around such topics as: \n\nExploring various dimensions of experiencing God’s love\nAssisting others in noticing\, savoring\, responding to their experiences of God\nDiscerning religious experience\nReflecting on various dimensions which constitute an experience of God\nExploring essential principles and dynamics of the contemplative / evocative approach to spiritual direction\n\nThis is an online program. \nRegister

A homecoming celebration awaits as we become more intimately aware of our human/divine oneness. \nLife is a Mystical Adventure\, an INNER Journey inviting us to COME (show up)\, Overcome (fear/survival based thinking) and BECOME fully awake and aware. \nAs St. Augustine has said\, “God became man so that man might become God\,” we need reminders of our divine inheritance. Perhaps our stories have fallen short or have been too narrow? \nYour “YES” to this  Retreat will allow you to spread your wings and to rise up and dwell in possibility\, to give birth to God through your life\, to experience the Paschal Mystery in a new way\, to turn mistakes into gold\, to recognize\, elevate and synchronize your thoughts and emotions and to truly celebrate a new “MO” of Mystical Oneness… Divine Love is truly in us and all around us. \nThis day is an opportunity for you to be inspired…to spread your wings and to embody your own unique life story.  The stories that will be shared during this retreat will be ones of Unity\, Compassion\, Coherence and Spirit-filled Love all leading us to the fundamental truth that God has tried to teach us all along: we are all One. \nHighlights of the day:\n\nPresentations by Kevin Barr\nPersonal time for prayer and reflection\nSacrament of Reconciliation\nCelebration of the Eucharist\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Silent Contemplative Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This weekend retreat\, led by Fr. Paolo Gamberini\, SJ\, will be guided by the spiritual practice of absolute silence and loving attention\, while also engaging in contact with nature. \nThe prayer of silence or quietness is a simple and loving gaze of the Presence in the present moment\, a loving attention to God's presence\, and a sweet rest of the soul in Him. As clearly stated in the Jesuits’ writings of Lallemant\, De Clorivière and De Caussade\, this prayer is a way of total surrender to God\, without images or content. In this prayer of silence\, the soul forgets all things\, and as much as possible\, lets go of any memory and attachment to all creatures. At the Presence of God\, each one remains in silence and places on standby all his/her acts of all faculties. As Mary kept everything in her heart\, so we too are called to pay attention to and be born of God\, becoming the Mystery that dwells in our secret. \nDuring each day\, there will be common sitting meditations\, varying in length. In these moments\, instructions regarding breathing and relaxation of the body will be given; each one is invited to remain silent with the help of a simple word to be repeated or remaining in simple and pure non-objective loving attention. \nAfter each meditation\, there will be a time for sharing in the group\, how the meditation was in its technical aspects. The meditations will be integrated with walking meditation in nature\, listening to the sensations of redundancy that the prayer of quietness produces. Every day there is an instruction on the contemplative method and some reflections from the Bible and mystical texts of different religious traditions. There will be opportunity to have individual sharing moments with the Instructor. The Sunday Eucharist will be celebrated in a contemplative style. \nGuidelines for the Weekend \nSitting is done on a chair\, a cushion or prayer bench:  you may bring  your own if you wish. Wear comfortable\, loose clothing and easy walking shoes. Bring a light blanket or a shawl\, since your body temperature may cool down while sitting. Since we will stay shoeless during the time of contemplation\, bring wool socks to keep your feet warm. Refrain from wearing "noisy" clothing (e.g.\, nylon\, corduroy\, jeans) items that jangle\, and watches that beep. No use of cellular phones will be allowed during the time of meditation and any kind of spiritual reading. For any questions\, please contact: pgamberini@sju.edu \nDate: February 24 - 26\, 2023 \nTime: Starting at 4:00pm \nRegister

SUMMARY:Taking a Breath: A Contemplative and Connecting Evening for Campus Ministers
DESCRIPTION:The Lenten season is a busy one for many Christians in ministry\, and campus ministers no less. Amid your daily service and before the rush of the season\, please join us for your own retreat space so that you can "take a breath": connect with other colleagues\, share your faith and experiences\, pray with us\, and most of all decompress. Grade school\, high school and college campus ministers alike are welcome.\n\nWe'll begin with a reflection inspired by Pope Francis's encyclical Fratelli Tutti and the charism of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus\, who animate St. Raphaela Center. As we work with young people to promote a culture of genuine encounter marked by collaboration instead of competition\, where are we on our own spiritual journey towards human fraternity? We will continue with small and large group sharing\, dinner\, and a simple musical liturgy with Eucharistic Adoration and periods of silence.\n  \nSuggested donation: $40 per person \nRegister
